Too many people are worried about the White Sox roster. They don't like this trade, or that signing. My biggest complaint is that people complain that there's no talent in the farm system, and then whine when that lack of talent is traded away.
Of all the prospects that KW has traded away, only one is right now looking like he might be something - Chris Young. Everyone raise their hands who is missing Michael Morse or Jeremy Reed right now. What about Matt Ginter or Brian Simmons or Mike Sirotka?
So everyone lighten up. Let's look at what KW has done here for a second. He's addressed SS with a + Defender and maybe average LO man. He's improved the pen with Linebrink.
He acquired two OFs who are under control for several years at reasonable rates (Quentin and Swisher). We have two young speedy guys (Owens\Richar) who might someday grow into top of the order guys - or may not.
Did we take the hit on Starting Pitching? Sure, trading Garland away hurts the stability of the rotation. But when the hell was Gonzalez going to pitch anyway? Was he proven? NO. Floyd and Danks have proven more at the MLB level than Gonzalez. They are less risky (lower ceiling, but lower risk too). The point is, with the kids you have to bite the bullet sometime, and there's really no guarantee that De Los Santos or Gonzalez don't turn into Ruffcorn. So had we kept them, Phil Rogers would still complain about not pitching the veteran until it was already too late.
So does that make the White Sox a clear contender for 2008? I have no clue. But here's the thing. If they tank, then we should be able to get decent prospects for Thome, Konerko and Dye - and maybe Vazquez.
Then Phil Rogers can complain about how KW is quitting on the present.
